It should be capable of providing adequate illumination for a specified duration, typically at least one hour dependant on risk assessment.
Emergency lighting is used to provide general illumination in specific areas where it is necessary to ensure the safety of people, such as plant rooms, control rooms, and first aid areas. It should have a minimum duration of three hours.
