BEC Electrical have been that contractor for nearly 20 years.

Brompton Bicycle has been handcrafting its iconic folding bikes at its Greenford factory since 1975. Britain's largest bicycle manufacturer and a global brand sold in over 47 countries, their production facility is a high-value, high-activity environment where downtime is not an option.


This project went to competitive tender. BEC were awarded the contract based on their long-standing relationship with Brompton, their familiarity with the site and their proven ability to meet Brompton's strict health and safety requirements.

The Challenge

The project required a full electrical installation for a new air conditioning system across a live manufacturing facility. With production running below, working at height both inside and on the roof presented significant technical and safety challenges throughout.

WORKING AT HEIGHT

Internal high-level works were carried out at approximately 20 metres using scissor lifts and cherry pickers. The manufacturing equipment directly below was of significant value, requiring exceptional care throughout.

LIVE PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT

All internal high-level works were scheduled for weekends to maintain business continuity and comply with Brompton's health and safety requirements. Production could not be disrupted during the working week.

COMPLEX CABLE ROUTES

Cable runs of up to 160 metres were required, routing from the shop floor up through the building and across the roof. Planning and sequencing these runs without impacting other trades required careful coordination.

The APPROACH

BEC led the project with detailed planning, close coordination with the Brompton facilities team and a safety-first approach at every stage. Regular progress meetings were maintained throughout.

DETAILED RISK PLANNING

Comprehensive RAMS documentation was produced prior to works commencing, reflecting the project's high level and Brompton's exacting health and safety standards.

SPECIALIST ACCESS

All high-level internal and roof works were carried out by BEC's own team, each holding certified training for scissor lift, cherry picker and roof edge access equipment operation.

SYSTEM COORDINATION

BEC worked directly alongside the air conditioning equipment supplier, installing their control panel, all associated control cabling and the fire alarm interface device that triggers automatic shutdown of the air handling units in the event of a fire alarm activation.

FULL SCOPE DELIVERY

BEC designed and installed a dedicated distribution board for the air conditioning plant, with individual supplies run to each piece of equipment. All roof containment and cabling was installed by BEC as part of the complete package.

ZERO DISTRUPTION TO PRODUCTION

All high-risk works were completed outside production hours. Brompton's manufacturing operation continued without interruption throughout the project.

We have used BEC Electrical for nearly 20 years during which time they have undertaken the electrical installation at two industrial units in Brentford before we moved in. We have also used them for the maintenance of our site electric circuits, and all the additional installation of power supplies, lighting and more as we have grown our production capacity from 5,000 to 45,000 bikes per annum over the 20 years.

Whenever we have had a breakdown condition BEC has always been very responsive to our needs, and when necessary have worked at weekends and occasionally overnight to minimise the impact on our production departments.
